Learn how to make delicious Old Fashioned Cucumbers and Onions. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 3 large cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)

For a twist, try substituting the white vinegar with apple cider vinegar for a slightly different flavor profile. If you prefer a sweeter taste, add a touch more sugar. And don’t be afraid to experiment with adding fresh herbs like dill or mint, which can add a lovely layer of complexity to the dish.

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced cucumbers and onions. Toss them gently to ensure even distribution.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the white vinegar, sugar, water, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir until the sugar and salt are fully dissolved.
  3. Pour the vinegar mixture over the cucumber and onion slices, ensuring that all the vegetables are submerged. If necessary, place a small plate on top of the vegetables to keep them submerged.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. For the best flavor, let the dish marinate overnight.
  5. Before serving, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. You might want to add a bit more salt or a sprinkle of fresh herbs for garnish.

This dish is wonderfully forgiving, and you can adjust the flavors to suit your preference. For an added kick, I sometimes sneak in a dash of cayenne pepper — a little trick I learned from my mum!
