Ingredients
Scale
As someone who treasures handwritten recipes, I believe in keeping things simple yet flavorful. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hoagie rolls or similar bread
- 8 slices provolone cheese
If you’re feeling adventurous, swap the provolone for cheddar or even a spicy pepper jack. After all, cooking is all about making it your own, just like my mum taught me.
Instructions
Cooking should be a joy, not a chore, so let’s keep things straightforward:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and green bell peppers, cooking until they start to soften, about 5 minutes.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon — my favorite kitchen tool — about 7-8 minutes.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Preheat your oven’s broiler. While waiting, slice the hoagie rolls and place a couple of slices of provolone cheese in each one.
- Spoon the beef mixture into the rolls, making sure each one is generously filled. More is always better, just like at our family dinners.
- Place the filled rolls on a baking sheet and broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly — about 2 minutes. Keep an eye on them; they can go from perfect to singed in a heartbeat.
