Ingredients
Scale
- 6 Hawaiian sweet rolls
- 6 slices of your favorite cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix works wonderfully)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional for a tangy kick)
- 2 slices of ham (optional, for added heartiness)
- 1 teaspoon of honey (to enhance the sweetness)
Instructions
- Begin by preheating a non-stick skillet over medium heat. This is crucial for achieving that perfect golden-brown crust.
- While the skillet is heating, slice each Hawaiian roll in half horizontally.
- Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the outside of each roll. This was a trick my mum taught me, ensuring every bite has that delightful buttery crunch.
- If you’re using mustard, spread a small amount on the inside of the rolls for a tangy surprise.
- Layer a slice of cheese and a slice of ham (if using) on the bottom half of each roll. Drizzle a tiny bit of honey over the cheese for that sweet note.
- Top with the other half of the roll, pressing gently to adhere.
- Place each sandwich in the hot skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until the cheese has melted and the bread is golden brown. In my experience, patience is key here — don’t rush it, let the cheese melt completely.
- Remove from skillet and allow to cool slightly before serving. This brief cooling period allows the cheese to set just enough, avoiding any unwanted mess.
